July 23, 2023 Special Edition

For those of you who tell me you are sad that our service has come to an end, that reading the blog is your favorite Sunday evening/Monday morning activity and that I should continue to provide weekly updates of every day life - this is for you!

First, we LOVE being home!  As sweet as serving a mission can be, there is nothing that compares to returning home to familiar surroundings, neighbors, friends and family.  We love having the space to walk around the house.  We love knowing we can zip over to our favorite fast foods and restaurants.  We love sleeping in our own bed.

Other than unpacking boxes and getting the house put back together, our days have mostly been filled with medical and dental appointments.  We are both grateful to be healthy and the visits so far have all been routine.  Oh yes, as broken as it is, we love the health system in the U.S. and the ready access we have to doctors and hospitals without waiting months for a simple procedure (sorry Canada, we were not impressed with your system).

Monday morning we both had eye exams and I visited the audiologist in the afternoon to have my hearing aids cleaned and adjusted (yes, I am deaf and wear hearing aids now. Ugh).  Tuesday morning we attended a session at the Oquirrh Mountain Temple and John saw the dermatologist in the afternoon.  I would share pictures but he looks kind of gross where he had some spots burned off and where they took a sample for a biopsy.

I had a dental appointment Wednesday morning and was so looking forward to having my teeth cleaned.  When I arrived, the door was locked and no one was in the office.  I called the office number and learned that they were closed until July 26.  How could that be - I had received an appointment reminder that very morning via email.  I'll have a serious chat with them on the 26th.  I decided to have a pedicure with the free time on my hands.  Or should I say feet? 😁

My first pedicure in nearly 2 years
Voila!  My happy feet.

While we were traveling home, my sister told me about fluff.  The kind you eat.  I don't think I had ever heard of fluff (except the marshmallow fluff that comes in a jar) and pretty sure I've never eaten it.  That I remember.  So she convinced me to make some when we got home.

That's a lot of fluff for two people!

It was easy to make - the hard part was waiting for it to set.  I made it late in the evening so we had to wait until the next day to try it.  I used raspberry Jell-O.  We both agree that fluff is quite tasty.  See how exciting my life is now?

Thursday I had my annual (annual when we're not on a mission) wellness checkup.

Here I am in the exam room, waiting for the doctor to chastise me for eating ALL the bread and French pastries in Montréal the past 18 months.  He was so impressed with my perfect blood pressure (120/70) that I think he forgot about how much weight I have gained.  Thank goodness I got something right!

Next stop, the optometrist to be fitted for new glasses

We invited my brother and sister-in-law for dinner Friday evening.  I took a picture of the table for a friend, then forgot to take pictures of the people sitting at the table later.  Oh well.

We had a salad bar, mostly so I wouldn't have to cook!  John grilled chicken outside; I made homemade ranch, thousand island and red wine vinaigrette dressings.  Fresh berry cobbler and ice cream for dessert.  We hadn't seen my brother since returning to Utah and it was nice to catch up with them.

No French labels on anything here - what's up with that?

I find myself at the grocery store a lot.  Replacing all the spices and staples that I usually keep in the pantry is rather time consuming.  I open the cupboard to get something and oh ya, I haven't thought to purchase that yet!  Hopefully, my trips to the store will slow down.  Shopping is not my favorite pastime.

Saturday we replaced the burned-out bulbs in the living room lights.  Then replaced the smoke detector in the hallway that had died.  We should be safe now.

Our garden is doing good.  We are eating zucchini and cucumbers and will have tomatoes very soon.  I told my niece that they had to plant a garden for us so we would have something to come home to.  They did a good job.

We have been getting up at 5:30 am to walk before it gets too hot.  This is my favorite place to sit and cool down after walking 2-3 miles.  It's shady, quiet and private and I am entertained by the birds and bees buzzing around the flowers and other plants.  This really is the good life!

Hope to see as many of you that can come to our homecoming next Sunday, July 30.  The address for the church is:

6253 W 6200 South, West Valley City

Our home address is 7255 W Silhouette Ln, West Jordan (or West Valley City on GPS).
