Angrignon Park Thursday afternoon
The park was almost deserted after the big snowstorm Wednesday night and all day Thursday. None of the roads or walkways had been cleared so we had to blaze our own trail. It was peaceful and quiet as we walked. It brought to mind the Robert Frost poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. I could only recall two or three lines of the poem from when I studied it back in high school. But it refused to leave my mind until I found the poem online and wrote it in my journal.
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though,
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Now you all can have the lovely poem streaming through your minds, too! We were back in the park the next day and wondering why none of the walking paths were cleared. Then we saw this and remembered that the 15 miles of trails in the park are used by cross country skiers in the winter!
And this is how the residential streets in Lasalle look today. They are reduced to one lane roads until all that snow gets removed or melts (no chance of that any time soon).
Our friend Alex went to the temple on Thursday evening to receive his endowments. He is the first of our temple prep class to go.
Sister Corbett, Elder Opper, Bishop Gagnon, Alex, Brother Valencia and us
As nice as the temple was, it was a raging blizzard outside when we left the temple at 9:30 pm. It turned into freezing rain about half-way home. John has some night blindness so I drive at night. This is the second week in a row I've driven the 45 minutes from the temple with very scary road conditions. I have vowed not to go to the temple here again at night in the winter!
On Saturday, I left John at home and I spent the day with Sister Corbett exploring the garment and textile district of Montréal. It was a great girl's day out! Saint Hubert street is lined with fabric and bead stores. I'm not into the beads but Sister Corbett enjoys making jewelry and had a good time finding new treasures.
Here's my happy place
A lot of the stores had upholstery and drapery fabrics and cater to designers. Some work mainly with theatres and costume designers. And some are for regular folks who love to touch the fabric and wish they could buy it all!
This was in a drapery store, whose owner wasn't too friendly. I had to sneak a photo of his ornate chandelier hanging in front of his display of several drapery designs in the front window. I think the little display area must have been designed many years ago and was probably quite elegant at the time. He needs to update with a more modern design but what do I know?
This newspaper article was in the window of one of the stores. It is an interesting history of the street if you want to enlarge it so you can read it.
We ate lunch at the food court in Eaton Mall. The mall is six stories and Sister Corbett really knows her way around - she is a dedicated shopper! John and I went to this mall once and couldn't find anything. We felt fortunate to find our way out of the mall again!
Ice cream is always a great way to end the day
During Christmas and as we have begun our study of the New Testament in Come Follow Me, my thoughts keep returning to Joseph. What a remarkable man he must have been. Except for his lineage and occasional mentions we really don't know much about him, especially after the birth of Jesus. I know that he loved Mary, that he was obedient and was protective of Jesus. Perhaps I will be blessed to meet Joseph at some future time and understand why I have such tender feelings for this man. The video included in this week's lesson materials increased my love and respect for Joseph. I think it is titled "The First Christmas Spirit." If you haven't had a chance to watch it, I have attached it here.
